A merchandiser is a person responsible for ensuring goods are in the right stores, or online at the right time and at the right price. They analyse data to set selling prices and plan promotions and price reductions. Simply put, they maximise sales and profits whilst minimising stock and costs.
We’ve compiled a list of 5 Qualities of a Good Merchandiser.
1. Ability to create a halo effect
A halo effect is a tendency for positive impressions of a person, company, brand or product in one area to positively influence one's opinion or feelings in other areas. Every successful merchandiser needs to create a positive impression in order to ensure easy future dealings.
2. Quick Decision making
When dealing with clients, merchandisers will need to make important decisions, this should be quick enough so that the normal flow of conversion is not interrupted.
3. Communication Skills
Every merchandiser must have excellent communication skills as they are continuously in contact with suppliers etc. Merchandisers may communicate directly or over a phone call. Here communication skills do not only mean good English or regional language but also speaking clearly and communicating effectively.
4. Ability to work in a team
Merchandisers will be required to work alongside others in their careers. Doing so in an empathetic, efficient and responsible manner can help accomplish career goals and contribute positively to your organisation.
5. Knowledge of the Industry
Every merchandiser must have adequate knowledge of the industry in which he/she is working in. Lack of knowledge may lead to an unsuccessful contract with buyers.
